Nikoi and Cempedak are working with Conservation International to establish a no-take zone and management plan for the existing 1800sqkm Marine Protected Area surrounding the two islands. Take a peek at some of the 504 marine species detected so far.

Late last year, Conservation International visited Nikoi to conduct a fish survey discovering 276 fish species, two of which are new, another two are awaiting confirmation, and several of which have never been photographed live before. In addition to the fish species, 202 marine invertebrates, 17 marine algae, three marine flora and six marine fauna have been identified, four of which are on the IUCN threatened list. Later this year, Nikoi is hoping to survey the Irrawaddy dolphins and Dugongs that have also been spotted in waters surrounding the island.
